Amy's Creative Side
Living in Hawaii we have wonderful flowers to enjoy.  The colors are glorious to look at.  Hibiscus come in so many colors and shapes.  The following picture is a hibiscus growing in my garden and it is one of them that led to my quilt that I am sharing during this Bloggers' Quilt Festival.
Note that the center of this hibiscus is a darker shade then the outer petal.  I could have chosen to use a different fabric for the very center but I wanted this to be simple design with fewer pieces. I found a fabric that gave a good change in color and did a little fussy cutting.   For my stamen I used small yellow beads and five larger ones to somewhat duplicate was in the real flower.  I hope that you enjoy my fabric interpretation of this flower.  I did the applique on this small quilt using back baste applique which has become my favorite method of doing traditional applique.  If you look really closely you will see a dragonfly in the quilting in the background.
Thank you for visiting.  Please go back to Amy's Creative Side and continue on viewing the beautiful quilts.

New Hawaiian Pillow designs

I have just released my newest Hawaiian Applique Pillow designs.  These are heliconia, ginger, torch ginger and orchid.  These will appeal to those who already have experience with applique since the ginger and orchid are more detailed.  I have all four in one pattern or the designs can be purchased individually. The design shown is the ginger.  I love the delicacy of this design.  The yellow and white ginger that this symbolizes are found growing wild on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hawaiian Quilt Retreat, 2013

Quilt Passions in Kailua Kona, Big Island, Hawaii will be having their fourth quilting retreat February 2-9, 2013.  There will be a bus tour to Waimea for the Cherry Blossom festival and quilt show and a Big Island Shop Hop.  They will have teachers from the mainland along with some of the local teachers.  The classes will be held at the Marriott King Kamehameha Beach Hotel.  This is just a parking lot away from the shop and the hotel is right by the beach.  You can't do much better than that.  I will be teaching two classes during this event.  One will be my Hawaiian applique class and the other will be an applique project that will be your choice of Tropically Hibiscus or three of the Under the Sea-With Me patterns.  The technique will be back baste applique.  This will be a good project to learn how to applique multiple pieces together easily.  Check in at Quilt Passions  later for more details.  There will be flyer available in July.  Plan your vacation now for a wonderful quilting retreat!
